THE GOLD WITHIN

A short documentary about Kansas City artist Michael Artis, built around a question worth asking every viewer: what's the gold within you that you haven't recognized yet?

The Story

"Everybody's carrying something valuable. Most people never had anyone point it out to them."

Michael paints strangers, not to capture how they look, but to show them something in themselves they've stopped being able to see. This film follows him into real portrait sessions, capturing the unscripted moment a stranger sees their own portrait for the first time. From there it moves through who Michael is now, back through where it started: the mother he lost, the four years he stopped painting, and into what nearly seven years of rebuilding actually looks like. It closes on that stranger, in a real conversation, proving the film's whole thesis in someone else's words.

KANSAS CITY VISUAL ARTIST & CONTENT CREATOR ยท PSYCHOLOGY, UMKC

Michael built a following painting strangers in real time and handing them the finished piece, turning a simple act of attention into a signature. He holds a psychology degree from UMKC, and it shows: his work is less about likeness and more about noticing what people stop being able to see in themselves.

Why this story is real, not manufactured: Michael spent nearly seven years rebuilding after a genuine period of loss: his mother's long illness, and four years where he stopped painting entirely. He's lived the exact thesis this film is built on: everyone carries something valuable, even when they can't see it themselves. That's not a brand message written for him. It's his actual life, in his own words.

Why This Matters

Self-worth isn't a soft topic. It's a public health one.

36.2%
of adults ages 18 to 25 report a mental illness, the highest rate of any age group, and Michael's core audience.
SOURCE: NIMH, 2022
60%
of people with a mental health problem won't seek help at all, for fear of being labeled or judged.

41%

The gap between "struggling" and "asking for help" isn't information. It's permission. That's exactly what this film is built to give someone, one real story at a time.

Who's Behind The Camera

Enigma Productions

Enigma Productions is a Kansas City video production studio founded by Quincy Lee, a filmmaker, director, and camera operator who's spent his career finding the real story inside a brand's or a subject's life, not just shooting coverage of it. Quincy also runs MNDSHFT NTWRK, a documentary-style interview series produced in formal partnership with Startland News. His camera work includes Amazon's social media campaign announcing a Thursday Night Football game (shooting the Kansas City and Denver portions) and an Apple TV MLS feature on a Sporting KC player's return from injury.

Enigma operates as a boutique studio by design (fewer clients, more craft per project), which is exactly the model this documentary is built under: real access, real time on the ground, and a finished film built to hold up next to any national campaign.
